Exploratory drawings are useful for visualizing ideas on paper. Drawings executed within the general framework of the Windows and Doors series begin with a framing concept. They are to some extent improvisational much like a jazz riff is created within a time signature or specific rhythm laid down by the drums or the bass. As a drawing develops, just as in many paintings, colors or lines suggest other colors or lines to follow. One thing or one action is not predicting another, rather one action will follow another as if in response to the first. Linear elements repeat or echo other linear elements. Color may do the same. There are many opportunities for visual rhyme.
As yet none of these drawings, and I’ve made well over a hundred of them, have been translated into paintings. I’m not certain that I will transcribe them directly. It might be more productive to just make large drawings on paper or canvas using appropriate implements. Paintings might develop from some of these drawings, however, but this would require developing painterly applications in place of the linear elements that dominate the drawings. So far I haven’t taken the time to develop those techniques, but I see that as a possibility in the not too distant future.
For now, here is the latest drawing in this ongoing series:
Yellow Corner, colored pencil on paper, 14” x 11”
